OUR STORY

Ciferno Well Services is a trusted service provider for the oil and gas industry, proudly based in southwestern Pennsylvania. Since our founding in 2011, we have grown from humble beginnings with just one truck to an established company operating 38 trucks and employing over 80 hard-working individuals. This rapid growth is a testament to our commitment to excellence and capability to adapt to the evolving demands of the energy sector.

Our roots trace back to the late 1960s when Joseph Ciferno established Ciferno Cement Contracting. Initially focusing on concrete flatwork, excavation, utility work, and trucking, the company was a staple in the region’s residential concrete construction industry. Throughout the years, the company continued to expand its capabilities and built a reputation for reliable service, integrity, and expertise.

In 1992, John Ciferno, Joseph’s son, joined the business as a partner after graduating from California University of Pennsylvania with a business degree. Over the next several years, John’s leadership, vision, and hard work transformed the company, and in 2008, he took full ownership of it. Under his leadership, the company shifted toward the growing energy sector.

In 2010, the natural gas industry began booming in Southwestern Pennsylvania, driven by rapid advancements in drilling technologies and the discovery of vast natural gas reserves in the Marcellus Shale. With the surge in demand for oil and gas services, Ciferno Cement Contracting seized new opportunities to support this thriving industry by focusing on hauling freshwater and production water for oil and gas producers. The company officially rebranded as Ciferno Well Services in 2011 to reflect this new direction and better align with the evolving energy landscape.

Since then, Ciferno Well Services has become a cornerstone of the region’s oil and gas service sector. Today, we offer a wide range of services, including water hauling, logistics, and well-site support, while maintaining our commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and customer satisfaction. We pride ourselves on our strong work ethic, skilled team, and ability to respond quickly to the industry's changing needs.

Our company has a proud history, but we are always looking ahead. As we continue to grow, we remain focused on providing high-quality, efficient, and safe services to our clients while supporting the local communities where we live and work. The values that guided our founding in the 1960s still guide us today: integrity, reliability, and a commitment to safety and excellence in everything we do.

At Ciferno Well Services, we are proud of our past and excited for the future. We look forward to continuing to serve our clients and make a positive impact on the energy industry for years to come.

ABOUT THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY

The oil and gas industry in Southwestern Pennsylvania has a long history, deeply shaping the region's economy and development. The area is historically significant as the birthplace of the American oil industry, with the first commercial oil well drilled in Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1859 by Edwin Drake. This discovery marked the beginning of a boom that would not only change the region but also have a huge impact on the trajectory of global energy production. Southwestern Pennsylvania, particularly the Appalachian Basin, became a key hub for oil and natural gas extraction, contributing to the rise of the United States as a major energy producer.

Today, the oil and gas industry in Southwestern Pennsylvania is still thriving, with the Marcellus and Utica shale formations being among the largest natural gas reserves in the world. These vast underground deposits have led to a surge in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and horizontal drilling operations, transforming the region into a critical source of natural gas. The discovery of the Marcellus Shale's potential had already begun to spark interest, but it was around 2010 when large-scale drilling operations truly took off. This period marked a dramatic increase in drilling activity, as companies invested heavily in exploration and extraction, influenced by rising global energy prices and a growing demand for natural gas as a cleaner alternative to coal and oil. The industry provides thousands of jobs and contributes significantly to the local economies in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
